Handmade Standards & Care
A guide to the natural variations, care, and character of Studio J.E.D.’s handmade lighting, tables, and heirloom-quality objects.
Our Cosmetics Standards
At Studio J.E.D., we take great pride in every handmade ceramic lighting piece, ceramic base table, and tempered glass table we create. Each piece is individually handcrafted, finished, and assembled with care in our Brooklyn studio.
Because our work is made by hand — not machine manufactured — natural variations, small irregularities, and evidence of the making process should be expected and celebrated. These details are part of what make each Studio J.E.D. piece one of a kind.
Please read through our cosmetic standards before placing an order.
Note: By placing an order with Studio J.E.D., you acknowledge that you have read, understand, and agree to these cosmetic standards.
Handmade Ceramic Variations
Each ceramic piece is individually formed by hand, which means no two pieces will ever be exactly alike. Variations in shape, surface, texture, scale, and finish are an inherent part of handmade ceramic work.
Ceramic is shaped by hand, dried, fired, glazed, and fired again. Throughout this process, clay naturally shrinks, shifts, and responds to heat in its own way. While we make every effort to follow the approved dimensions and design, exact machine-like precision should not be expected.
Glaze, Color, & Finish Variations
Every Studio J.E.D. glaze is applied by hand and fired in a kiln. Because of this, glaze color, opacity, speckling, surface movement, sheen, and texture may vary slightly from piece to piece.
We cannot guarantee an exact color match to a previous order, website image, sample photo, rendering, or reference image. We will use the selected Studio J.E.D. glaze or finish requested for your order, but slight variation should be expected.
Glazes may appear different depending on lighting, room color, time of day, and surrounding materials. A glaze seen in natural daylight may look warmer, cooler, lighter, or darker in another space.
Studio J.E.D. does not offer factory-perfect, digitally identical color matching.
The beauty of handmade ceramic work is that every piece carries its own subtle variation.
Custom Colors & Reference Photos
We are happy to use reference photos as inspiration for custom work, but we do not guarantee exact matches from images. Photos can be affected by filters, lighting, screen brightness, camera settings, and surrounding interiors.
If you are requesting a custom color or finish, we will do our best to interpret the desired direction, but ceramic glaze is not the same as paint. Glaze changes through the firing process, and results can vary depending on thickness, clay body, kiln atmosphere, and application.
Once a custom glaze or finish is approved and the piece is made, Studio J.E.D. cannot remake or refinish the piece because the color is not an exact match to a photo or imagined reference.
Ceramic Base Tables
Studio J.E.D. ceramic base tables are sculptural, handmade furniture pieces. Each ceramic base is built individually, and slight differences between bases should be expected.
For ceramic dining tables, coffee tables, side tables, and console tables, you may notice subtle variation in height, diameter, curve, texture, surface finish, or overall shape. These variations are part of the handcrafted nature of the work.
Because ceramic shrinks during drying and firing, final measurements may vary slightly from the quoted dimensions. For larger ceramic bases and tables, we allow up to approximately 1 inch of variation across overall measurements, unless a specific tolerance has been agreed upon in writing before production begins.
Studio J.E.D. tables are not intended to look like mass-produced furniture. They are ceramic sculptures designed to function beautifully in the home!
Tempered Glass Table Tops
Pucks, Pads, Hardware & Support Details
Some Studio J.E.D. tables may include silicone pads, acrylic pucks, brass pucks, metal supports, recessed ceramic receivers, or other stabilizing details. These elements are chosen based on the table design, glass size, base shape, and intended use.
Because these details are often integrated by hand, small variations in placement, depth, alignment, or visibility may occur. We make every effort to keep support details clean, secure, and visually discreet, but they may not be completely invisible.
For tables with glass tops, the glass should be removed before moving the table. Moving a fully assembled glass-and-ceramic table can place unnecessary stress on the glass, pucks, pads, adhesive, and ceramic bases. Studio J.E.D. is not responsible for damage caused by improper moving, dragging, lifting, or daily repositioning.
Ceramic Lighting
Studio J.E.D. lighting is handcrafted and assembled with care. Ceramic lamps, sconces, pendants, and chandeliers may include natural variations in form, glaze, perforation, shade shape, cord placement, hardware alignment, and overall finish.
Because each ceramic lighting piece is made by hand, small differences between pairs or multiples should be expected. A pair of lamps or sconces will be made to feel cohesive, but they will not be identical in the way a factory-produced set would be.
Metal hardware, brass details, linen cords, canopies, sockets, switches, and bulbs may have slight finish variations depending on availability and production batch. We source quality components and assemble each piece thoughtfully, but subtle differences in hardware finish or tone may occur.
Lighting should always be installed by a qualified electrician when hardwiring is required. Studio J.E.D. is not responsible for damage or installation issues caused by improper installation, incorrect bulbs, mishandling, or modifications made after delivery.
Our tempered glass tops are designed to rest securely on clear silicone interface pads placed between the glass and the ceramic bases. These pads are not used to conceal imperfections; they are a standard component of professionally constructed glass-top furniture.
Even precisely fabricated stone, concrete, marble, and ceramic surfaces are not perfectly flat at a microscopic level. The silicone pads create a stable, even contact point between the handmade ceramic and the glass while also helping to:
prevent direct glass-on-ceramic contact
reduce vibration and contact noise
protect both the glass and ceramic surfaces
provide grip so the glass is less likely to shift
accommodate subtle material movement and variation
The pads are clear, discreet, and selected according to the dimensions and construction of each table. Depending on the design, they may be approximately 1/16" to 1/8" thick and are generally barely visible once the table is assembled.
Because every ceramic base is formed and finished by hand, slight variation in the top surface is natural. The support-pad system allows the tempered glass to sit level, stable, and properly supported while preserving the sculptural character of the handmade ceramic bases.

Lead Times
With every order, Studio J.E.D. provides an estimated lead time. Lead times are our best estimate based on the current studio schedule, material availability, glass fabrication timelines, kiln firings, drying time, finishing, assembly, and delivery coordination.
Because ceramics must dry slowly and go through multiple firing stages, production cannot always be rushed without risking the quality or structural integrity of the piece.
We will always do our best to complete orders within the estimated timeline, and sometimes pieces may be completed earlier. However, delays can happen due to kiln schedules, drying conditions, glaze results, glass fabrication, hardware availability, shipping, delivery coordination, or necessary quality control.
Studio J.E.D. cannot guarantee an exact delivery date unless that has been specifically agreed upon in writing. If you are ordering for a special occasion, event, move-in date, holiday, photoshoot, or deadline, please communicate that before placing your order. We will do our best to accommodate, but quality and safety will always come first.
It is better for a handmade piece to take the time it needs than to rush production and compromise the final result.
Our Promise
Studio J.E.D. celebrates the true uniqueness of handmade ceramic design. Every piece is created with care, intention, and respect for the natural qualities of clay, glaze, glass, and handcraft.
We do not offer machine-made perfection. We offer sculptural, functional pieces that carry the marks of the artist’s hand and are made to bring beauty, warmth, and character into your home. Customers who prefer perfectly uniform, machine-manufactured products may not be the right fit for handmade ceramic work. Studio J.E.D. pieces are created for customers who appreciate the individuality, warmth, and presence of objects made by hand.
It is our hope that you will love and appreciate the individuality of your Studio J.E.D. piece for years to come!
